How to get to Pena Palace

Pena stands on a hilltop of the Serra de Sintra, above the old town. We could not confirm its exact postal address in the sources we read, so use the map on this page or the official site. The park has two entrances, the main one and the Lakes entrance.

By train from Lisbon

Take the CP train on the Sintra line from Rossio, Oriente or Entrecampos. From Rossio the ride is about 40 minutes, according to a timetable site that we could not check against CP: look at cp.pt for times and fares. At Sintra station take bus 434 to Pena.

Bus 434

Scotturb bus 434 runs a circuit from the station through São Pedro and the old town to the Moorish Castle and Pena. The 24-hour hop-on hop-off ticket is 13.50 € at the counter and 10.96 € online. Check the time of the last bus down before you go up.

On foot

From the station it is about 33 minutes on foot to the main entrance by our OpenStreetMap estimate, and the climb is steep, so allow more. Parques de Sintra marks three trails: Santa Maria (1.8 km, 1 hour, from São Pedro), Seteais (2.4 km, 1 hour 30) and Vila Sassetti (1.85 km, 45 minutes). The Moorish Castle is 5 minutes on foot from the main entrance.

By car, tuk-tuk or tour

Private vehicles cannot go up to Pena, and driving in the historic centre is reserved for residents. Parques de Sintra points to peripheral car parks such as Lourel. Tuk-tuk tours start at the station, and day trips from Lisbon are listed on the Tiqets cards.
